The Golden Triangle is the point where the Ruak river runs into the Mekong and the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet at a single stretch of water. The Thai side of that confluence is the village of Sop Ruak, in Chiang Saen district at the northern edge of Chiang Rai province, and it's from the landing here that the longtail boats leave.

The boat trip is the reason to come. From the riverbank you're looking at a fairly ordinary river junction; from mid-channel you can see all three countries at once — Thailand behind you, Myanmar off to the left across the Ruak, and the Laotian bank stretching away downstream. Longtails are open, loud and fast, and the Mekong here is wide, brown and moving seriously quickly, which is more impressive in person than photographs suggest.

Most trips run 40 minutes to an hour on the water, and many operators include a stop on the Lao bank, where there's a market aimed squarely at day visitors. Back on shore, Sop Ruak itself is a compact strip of stalls, viewpoints and a large Buddha image facing the river. The area's opium-trade history is covered by two separate museums here — the Hall of Opium and the smaller House of Opium — and the Hall of Opium in particular is a serious, well-built museum rather than a novelty stop.

Practical Information

Boats operate through daylight hours, roughly 08:30 to 17:00, and run when they fill rather than to a fixed timetable — in low season you may wait or pay to cover empty seats. Expect somewhere around THB 300–600 per boat for a short circuit, split between passengers, with longer runs downstream toward Chiang Saen costing more. The museums charge separately.

If your trip includes the Lao-side stop, bring your passport — it's a border crossing, even though it's handled informally for short visits and no Thai visa complications arise on return. Confirm with the operator before booking if you're unsure.

There's no dress code on the boat, but bring sun cover: the longtails are open-topped and there is no shade on the water. November to February is the comfortable window; the river runs highest and muddiest at the end of the rainy season.

Getting There

Sop Ruak is about 60 km north of Chiang Rai city — roughly an hour by road, so this is a day trip rather than a quick outing. There's no direct public bus to the confluence itself. The usual options are a chartered car or taxi for the day, or a bus from Chiang Rai's bus terminal to Chiang Saen (the nearest town, on the Mekong) followed by a short songthaew or tuk-tuk ride the last 10 km to Sop Ruak.

Most visitors do this as part of an organised day tour from Chiang Rai, which is usually the cheaper option once transport is accounted for, and typically bundles the Golden Triangle with other stops in the province.

Sop Ruak sits in the far north of the province, so it pairs with the other Chiang Rai highlights on a full-day loop rather than a short hop:

• White Temple (Wat Rong Khun): Chalermchai Kositpipat's all-white contemporary temple, south of Chiang Rai city in Mueang district — the other end of the province from Sop Ruak, and usually done on a separate half-day.

• Doi Mae Salong: The tea-growing mountain village northwest of Chiang Rai, settled by former Kuomintang soldiers. Combines well with the Golden Triangle on a long day out through the province's northern hills.
